On the third Friday of September in 2012, Irwin Tools employees stood outside two of the country's best-known job sites and shook hands with the crews walking in. One was One World Trade Center in New York. The other was the Parkland Hospital job in Dallas, at the time the largest healthcare construction site in the country. That was National Tradesmen Day, year two. Irwin also threw an appreciation party at The Green Parrot in Key West, Florida.
National Tradesmen Day 2026 was Friday, September 18. In 2027 it falls on Friday, September 17. Show up where the work is. Bring food.
When is National Tradesmen Day?
The third Friday in September. That was September 18 in 2026, and it will be September 17 in 2027. The date moves because the observance is fixed to that Friday, a rule set in the original announcement. You will also see it written as National Tradesman Day and as National Tradesperson Day. National Day Calendar keeps "Tradesmen" in the title and in the hashtag (#NationalTradesmenDay) and writes "tradespeople" in its own body copy.
Nobody gets it off. It is not a federal holiday.
Irwin Tools started National Tradesmen Day in 2011
Irwin Tools announced it on February 10, 2011 out of Huntersville, North Carolina. The release named Friday, September 16, 2011 as the first observance and put the whole thing under one line, "The Hands that Build America." Curt Rahilly, vice president of marketing at Irwin Tools, says in the announcement, "Tradesmen are the bedrock of America, and we invite the nation to be a part of 'National Tradesmen Day,' to honor the men and women who contribute to our lives in so many meaningful ways."
"Whether through a national proclamation, or a simple box of doughnuts taken to a jobsite, we can show tradesmen that we appreciate their work," Rahilly says.
The proclamation half took longer, and it never went national. On September 1, 2011, tradesmen were the honored guests at the New York Stock Exchange opening bell ceremony, with Irwin's 2010 Ultimate Tradesman Challenge champion, Delwyn Thornton, at the bell. In 2022, Tampa Mayor Jane Castor signed a proclamation naming Friday, September 16 National Tradesmen Day in Tampa. The document counts 36 trades workers in Tampa's Facility Management Division who keep up 7.7 million square feet across 677 locations.
What National Tradesmen Day is not
It is not a union day or a company day, and barely a sponsored campaign now. Irwin has been a Stanley Black & Decker brand since 2016, and the original nationaltradesmenday.com does not serve a page anymore. The day kept going anyway. National Day Calendar carries it now, along with Associated Builders and Contractors chapters on the merit shop side, contractors, distributors and the trade schools.
National Tradesmen Day vs. National Skilled Trades Day
National Skilled Trades Day is a different observance. It falls on the first Wednesday in May (May 6, 2026) and was created by City Machine Technologies, first held in 2019.
The trades by the numbers in 2026
The Bureau of Labor Statistics put the median wage for electricians at $63,190 a year, or $30.38 an hour, in May 2025, against $50,980 for all US workers. Take that median for what it is. It counts first-year apprentices and residential helpers in the same column as topped-out journeymen.
A high school diploma gets you in the door. The apprenticeship is the job itself, roughly four to five years of paid work with classroom hours stacked on top, and most states then put you in front of a licensing exam, with continuing education hours after that. No degree.
There were 821,000 electrician jobs in 2025. BLS projects 9 percent growth through 2035, much faster than the 3.5 percent it projects for total US employment, and about 72,700 openings a year. Construction as a whole employed 8,359,000 people in August 2026, at average hourly earnings of $41.66. That $41.66 covers everyone on a construction payroll, office staff included, not just the crafts.
Anirban Basu, chief economist at Associated Builders and Contractors, says that if current consensus forecasts hold true, the industry will need to bring in 349,000 new workers in 2026 "just to keep the supply and demand for labor in equilibrium." ABC's model puts 2027 at 456,000. Basu also says demand for electricians "capable of precision wiring has surged due to the rapid increase in data center construction," and that roughly one-fifth of all electricians are over 55. Precision wiring is his phrase. On a data center job it means tray, busway, gear sets and terminations.
In the 2025 Current Population Survey the median age of electricians is 39.6, younger than the 42.1 median for the workforce as a whole.
Census had private data center construction running at a $75.2 billion annual rate in July 2026, up 57.2 percent from $47.8 billion a year earlier. The AGC of America and NCCER workforce survey drew 1,830 respondents in July and August 2026. Electricians came out as the most widely reported hard-to-fill craft. Of the firms with electrician openings, 81 percent said they had trouble filling them. We wrote separately about getting into a data center electrician apprenticeship.
Construction Appreciation Week 2026 ended on Tradesmen Day
Construction Appreciation Week 2026 ran September 14 to 18, the third week of September, so its last day was National Tradesmen Day. I Build America founded the week in 2018, and the hashtag is #ThanksForBuilding.
The IBEW's 41st International Convention runs September 21 to 25, 2026 at the San Diego Convention Center. Article II of the IBEW constitution requires one every five years. Membership passed 900,000 this summer, the largest it has been in nearly 40 years. International President Kenneth W. Cooper says, "We're in a new electrical revolution. And IBEW members are leading the charge, just as we have for our entire 135 year history."
How people actually mark National Tradesmen Day
Mostly the way Irwin drew it up in 2011. Doughnuts and coffee at the gang box. A superintendent buying lunch. A city proclamation, if somebody asks. National Day Calendar tells people to "give a shout out to the tradespeople keeping businesses and homes running smoothly."

Willie Warren was 90 when IBEW 1245 wrote him up in July 2025. He joined the local in 1959 as a warehouseman, moved into the electric department as a groundman, topped out as a lineman in the mid-1960s as the first Black lineman at PG&E, later got barehand certified on 500kV lines, and finished his career in management. In 2025 Warren went into the Lineman Hall of Fame. Warren says, "Regardless of whether I was a union member, or in management, my respect for what IBEW 1245 did for its members never wavered. They helped write safety rules that got me home each night. For that I am eternally grateful."
